4.5/5
Strengths: The best part of this novel is that it was not fictitious. The 'memoir' makes everything believable and more enjoyable for a reader. Moreover, it was a religious story told by a wise, religious man. Todd Burpo had been preaching for around half of his life at the time of publication, allowing him to incorporate many Biblical stories and passages. With ease, he could interpret what Colton was telling him and relay it in a way that all audiences can understand.
Weaknesses: Todd Burpo did not go to Oxford University to study English composition nor did he win any Pulitzer prize, so it is understandable that there are some mistakes with the wording. There aren't enough to take away from the purpose, however. The only reason I noticed it is because I read very thoroughly and pick apart every sentence if it doesn't make sense. That is the only thing knocking the book down by a half a star.
Message: Todd Burpo didn't have to tell this story. He chose to. I believe that God chose an excellent man to join ministry. Todd is fulfilling an excellent life by telling Colton's story. Without it, I may not have gained more faith. I think that was his purpose, to inspire people like me to want to become more connected to God and his son.
I Recommend To: EVERYONE. At a time in my life I was an atheist, but I have returned. Not necessarily because of this book, but it has definetly pushed me closer to God. It would be very hard to detest this story, so everyone should give it a chance.
